F21 to Jamaica

Post by Teke's Pride »

So, I'm in Rose Hall, Jamaica for a working holiday. Great sun and wind! Now I'm dreaming about whether or not I could solo sail my F21 from the Florida coast to the Bahamas and down the Islands to Jamaica. Would it be asking too much from my plucky little camp cruiser?

I think the boat would make it but you might not. The Gulf Stream can be brutal if the breeze is from the north, which is the ideal direction you'd want to get to the Bahamas. If the breeze is from the south the seas will flatten down but you'll get swept to Jacksonville before you get out of the Stream. I've sailed in the Stream in 45-50' boats where we pounded so hard, even reaching, that we snapped rudders off. If you consider it, make sure your gooseneck is heavily reinforced, the mast step is fulled locked in position, your rudder has no play and you've got plenty of time.
