First race weekend with new Square Head Main

Hi all,

Yesterday was the first weekend of the Fall Race Series at my club. When I arrived at the club it was blowing 10-13 mph; by the skippers' meeting it had dropped to 5-7 mph; and by race time it was only 2-4 mph. So, how does my new Square Head Mainsail perform in light air? F###ing great!

With my 25 year-old original main I would have finished dead last on every race. In fact I probably would have withdrawn after race one. With this new sail I was right with the fleet for most of the race. Thanks again to Mack Sails for this great sail at a great price! The next test for me and this new sail is in two weeks when I will be competing in the BCSA's Great River Race. I'll be racing the "short course" which is 17 miles or 8 hours, which ever comes first.

Way to go. Congratulations!

Sails and bottom completely change the performance of a boat.

How does she do with the square top when the wind pipes up?
Is it harder to hoist or reef?

cheers,

I don't have any data or experience on heavy air yet with the new sail. The summers here in North Alabama are usually very calm wind wise (except during the Thunder Storms). Our sailing season has just begun. Due to the weather patterns, the best sailing is late September through May. I'll keep you all posted.

The Tennessee Valley Challenge Cup is this weekend and I had planned on entering to help my club (BCSA) compete but my outboard packed it in last Saturday and is in the shop until next Thusday. I also had an unexpected need for oral surgery yesterday so my enterence fees have been eaten by those 2 expences. It is a shame too, becaues Saturday's lake wind for cast is for 9 kts gusting to 17.

Great news about the new setup. Glad its working!

Sound like I need to get me one.. if I can talk the board into just getting me some new sails.

Second Saturday of racing with my new sail is in the bag. I had motor problems in the morning so I did not make it to the line for the first race. I had a DNS, a 4th, and a 3rd. THis gave me a 4th for the day out of 5 boats. Winds were 10-12 mph all day and I had good starts. On the down wind legs I was able to make up time on the S2 7.0, the Eliott 770, and hold off the Flying Scott. A Laser crossed the line in 2nd or third for every race and beat us all on corrected time. The DNS killed me. I think, had I been in all three races, I could have pullen in 3rd overall.

Wish me luck next week.
