Hello,
I'm Allan, owner of Freedom 28 Gulliver since February 1984 (yes, 30 years!).

Just a little history:
Purchased the boat new in Clear Lake, Texas. In December 1984 sailed from Galveston along the Intracoastal Waterway to Florida and then South to the Florida Keys and the Dry Tortugas. Spring of 1985 sailed North up the Intracoastal as far as Beaufort, South Carolina. Worked there for a couple years then sailed back down to Florida. Moved to Washington State and used the boat as a winter retreat. In 1993 had the boat hauled up to Washington and put into charter for two years. In 1998 moored the boat at Jarrell's Cove Marina which has been it's home port to this day. Last year (2013) my oldest son graduated from college and we took a long-promised cruise up to Desolation Sound in Canada.

There have been lots of repairs and upgrades along the way and I'd be happy to share my experiences with the forum.

Gulliver's travels

Post by VeloFellow »

Sounds like you and Gulliver have had a good run. Share a photo or two.

Which interior? aft head? Closed front cabin?

Have you used an autopilot or windvane?

Is your interior intact, modified?

Mizzen Staysails, How many? How big?

I have hull #54 built in late 1983. It has a v-berth forward then head to port and hanging locker to starboard. The locker door doubles to close off the forward cabin. Dinette port amidships and settee starboard amidships. Galley aft to starboard and quarterberth to port.

I have an old Autohelm hung on the pedestal driving the wheel.

I added bookshelves to port and lockers covered with sliding smoked plexiglas doors to starboard, modeled on the stock options at the time. I have a diesel heater just aft of the hanging locker.

Early on I searched the used sails brokers to find a nylon "drifter" from a sloop with the appropriate luff, foot and leech dimensions and used that as my mizzen staysail. It works great!

I'll share some photos in another post.

Amazing how much the mizzen staysail adds isn't it?
Last weekend we sailed a bit with just the main and staysail as we had the bimini up and It is harder to get the main ready to raise...
Previous owner of Clave' also got a light drifter and a much heavier small jib as heavier range mizzen.

I am looking at an autohelm, raymarine ev 100.

Nice photos.
