A couple F30 questions.

Hi all! I've got a couple issues to resolve and I'm looking for some input. First, can some Freedom 30 owners tell me about their shower drain setup? All I have is a very small drain that flows into a small piece of rubber hose that drains into the bilge. If you try to take a shower you wind up standing in gray water almost up to the bottom of the head door. It eventually drains, but it takes forever. I'm wondering if an inline shower pump routed to the bilge pump overboard fitting would help. Second, when I bought the boat, the PO had been working on replacing the headliner. He completed the main salon using beadboard and it looks great, however I'm not sure what to do in the head. Can anyone send me some pictures of what the ceiling in the head should look like?

Thanks

We sold our F30 10 years ago - traded up to F38. Our F30 shower drained into a plastic sump box in the bilge (keel sump) with a small bilge pump and float switch - plumbed to overboard discharge. Preferable to not drain grey water into the bilge. Two most likely culprits in slow shower drainage are a clog or kink in the drain hose, or the hose being routed in a way that causes the water to flow up hill before flowing down hill. You will need to remove your sole (floor boards) to inspect and correct. Regarding the overhead, we had separating vinyl throughout our 38 - including the head. We took down all of the overhead panels, removed the foam backed vinyl and used the luan plywood pieces as templates to cut pebble FRP board into exact replacement panels. We purchased the FRP board from Home Depot and put a ring of 2" wide, 1/4" thick self adhesive foam insulation around the perimeter and across each panel to make up for the difference in thickness between the FRP board and the original luan/foam backed vinyl. The new surface is durable, washable and bright (does a better job of reflecting light). We used the original teak trim strips and batons for installation.

Agree with Bob on headliner. I replaced mine with foam backed about 10 years ago. Bought it directly from FYI before they stopped building boats. But my headliner has recently separated from the foam backing yet again and I will have to replace it. I like Bob's solution.

So Bob, when you say "pebble FRP" , this is a thin piece of material with a textured side painted white??

Re shower, I have the exact set up Bob mentioned. Sump in forward bilge area with a small pump with independent swithching at the panel. Check your panel for a sump switch, may find something wired up for a pump which PO removed?? The drain hose is very tight and hard to get to. It is probably kinked or blocked. You'll have to fight your way under the showwr pan to find our what's up. My boat has a small 6 inch by six inch cutout in the sole just ourside the head door to allow access to the small space under the pan.

Hi Mike, yes - basically a fiberglass board with a pebbled surface on front and smooth on back. Home improvement stores typically sell them for renovating home bathrooms. Easy to cut with a saber saw and very durable.

Thanks Bob, I googled it after I asked the question and found several examples of the material. Looks like an excellent headliner replacement. The project just got about 75% easier. Cutting and gluing the headliner material was a major PIA.
