How to Remove the Old Freedom Decal?

Post by GeoffSchultz »

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the old Freedom decals? Mine are brittle and come off in very small pieces.

I used a hair drier on high and that worked great. It came up more or less in big pieces. I was impressed. I got the remaining adhesive off using 3M Adhesive Remover and a plastic razor. Of course now I can see how much the gel coat has yellowed! I hope the new ones are as big or bigger!

Geoff, as the creator of the new ones, I hope they are EXACTLY the same size! I spent hours trying to figure that part out! The edges of ours were so worn, it was impossible to get a precise measurement of the outside dimension. And they came off in brittle pieces, too.

We're lucky, though -- we're putting the new ones on shiny just-painted cabin sides, so as long as they go on straight, we don't have to worry about the placement of the previous ones. As one list member (who shall remain anonymous) wrote to me after he tried to apply them and had to order another one, "The admiral doesn't like crooked."

Having just spent some time this morning removing the old ones, I can assure you that the new ones are smaller than the ones on my 40/40. These appear to be oriented in portrait mode on a 8.5x11 whereas I suspect that the newer ones were in landscape mode. The font is also different, not that it matters. I'm sure that Freedom changed things as time went along.

I'll just have to go over that area with finishing compound. I recently did the entire top-sides, but didn't polish very much around the decals.

Regardless, I'm just happy to have new decals. The old ones were looking a bit shabby.

Dear Geoff or any other Freedom Owner,
Where can I get 2 new Freedom Decals for my 1995 Freedom 35? Mine are also very worn, fading & cracking...
Thanks!
