Notes on applying AwlCare

Post by GeoffSchultz »

I was just about to type these up and send them to myself, but then I realized that perhaps someone else might benefit from them, so I'll just post them here.

AwlCare is a polymer sealer designed for use on AwlGrip. I didn't use it for quite a few years due to some negative comments that I had heard about it, but then I tried it and love it. This is the second year that I've used it. It's a bit of a pain to put on, but with good surface prep you can make it look great. Here's the steps that I follow:

1) Wash the hull and use a chamois to dry
2) Use a cleaner like Formula 409 to carefully clean each section that you're working on. Be sure to remove any water stains as the AwlCare will emphasize them.
3) Shake the product well
4) Use a VERY clean cloth to apply, making multiple swirling passes over the area. I do 3' wide sections. I use a separate cloth for the boot stripe area.
5) Allow to haze over
6) Use a very soft cloth, such as a diaper, to remove dried material.
7) Use a second cloth to polish
8) Repeat...repeat...repeat
9) When complete, re-inspect hull repolishing areas that have swirls. Re-apply if polishing doesn't remove swirl.
10) Cheer and have a beer!
