Freedom 40 CC Ballast

Post by bad »

I have our boat currently hauled, this hull No 21, vintage 1978 and I am trying to get a better understanding of the ballast. Best I can tell there are three locations of ballast - keelson, centerboard, and lead ingots in the bilge. Total ballast is advertised at 6000 lbs.

- The keelson appears to have lead, that is encapsulated. Anybody know more about this, also how much lead there is?
- We have had the opportunity to weight our centerboard - more on this on a separate thread - and it weights 1100 lbs. The head of the board is solid glass, the fin portion seems to be a fiberglass shell filled with metal (lead or steel).
- We have a small pile of lead ingots under or cabin table. I'll try and get an estimate on the amount. Not sure if that is for ballast or trim. We have about 300 gallons (nominally 2400 lbs) of combined water and fuel tanks behind the aft bulkhead of the main cabin so it is possible the lead ingots are compensating for that to affect the trim?!

Anybody else have experience or insights?

Erik
