Singlehand racer on F30 needs input on rudder issue

Post by gamayun »

My friend, Mike, is racing his Freedom 30, Jacqueline, to Hawaii right now. He reports that his rudder is stiff and hard to turn. He dove on it. There's nothing fouling it and it appears to be in good shape visually. He has also looked over the entire system. The ram was disconnected and backdrive was OK. He is continuing on but is wondering if anyone else has also had such a problem. Please let me know and I will relay any suggestions back to the comms boat.

Maybe a dumb thought -- but has he already thought of the chance of something in the pedestal (cables, wiring, brake or bearings) fouling the chain or cables of the radial drive?

Not sure. It was asked, but I have heard nothing more since the initial report. They're communicating on single sideband between boats, with one standing nearby, but I don't think Mike himself has an SSB.
