cheap LED flex neck lamp

Post by mike cunningham »

Just completed the marinization of a $20 Lowe's goose neck LED lamp to replace a badly corroded traditional brass (coated) gooseneck I had installed years ago.

Lowe's sells this lamp with a weighted base for normal desktop use. It comes with a transformer which I confirmed outputs 12 VDC. So I simply removed the base and on/off switch trashed the transformer and fabricated a new teak base which I hung from the forward main cabin bulkhead where the old gooseneck lamp used to be.

Works great for reading and general cabin light (high color temperature though so not perfect) and pulls a miserly 1/10 amp at 12 Volts.

I'm sure the electronics package is less robust than a real marinized version but I can do 5 of these for the price of one of those.

I think that the biggest problem that you'll have is that the power supply is designed to output 12V and your batteries are hopefully above that. This will cause the LED to be over driven and generate excessive heat, causing premature failure.

Not enough feedback to go on but I agree that I wouldn't buy these particular ones based on whats there. Only one guy complains of early failure. Also these are not the only ones on the web, there are some others out there.
