40/40 Rudder Bearing

Since we're not going cruising this season due to the lightning strike, I'm undertaking some other tasks. I dropped the rudder yesterday and here's what I found. The photo shows the top of the rudder and a swivel type bearing.

First off, does anyone know who makes this bearing?

Next, is this supposed to be pressed into place such that the outer chase of the swivel is in tight contact with the rudder tube? Mine was not tight & I suspect that the bearing is OK.

To answer my own question, this bearing was made by Tides Marine, but they no long make it.

Hey Geoff,
I spent a couple of hours trying to drop the rudder on my F40/40 today and it would t budge. We remove quadrant and pilot arm. Rudder spins freely and we can get to wobble just a bit. But it won’t drop down. Am I missing something?

Everything is super clean and there don’t seem to be any problems. Just want to check everything out before sailing to Hawaii and back this summer.

Thanks!
Tony

No. I haven’t been able to get it to drop. Wondering if I have to remove the top bearing first.

Obviously it depends on how its all put together. If it was the quadrant holding the rudder up, it had to have a bearing surface to work against. Any part that now still turns with the shaft could be what's holding it up. Any chance you got pictures? Your hauled out at BMC, no? I may swing by if you guys are there on a regular basis. Geoff's lower bearing looks to be self aligning and press-fit into the hull. Do you have the same design? Also, was there a gland or seal to keep the water from coming out inside the boat?
