Stainless steel hardware: 316 vs 304
Stainless steel hardware: 316 vs 304
Anyone has experience using 304 stainless steel hardware (nuts and bolts) on deck? I'm replacing all the standing blocks on my boat, and wonder if I can substitute 304 to 316 ss nuts and bolts.

Stay with the 316, you will suffer more with rust with 304.

Alain,
I used screws from the Home Depot (it's called Praxis here) that are sold as stainless steel and that I suspect to be 304. They are not as shiny as real 316 screws. They start rusting within six months on fresh water. Now I only use them in the interior.
