Phillip, I tried soaking the halyards in freshwater with a fabric softener, and it seemed to help.

I've put lines right into the washing machine with normal laundry detergent. Take them out before the spin cycle though or you got one heck of a tangle on your hands and it might not be good for the machine. They tend to come out nice and soft but a bit frizzy. The frizzy wears off quickly.
