Sailmaking Support Systems

Post by GeoffSchultz »

Has anyone used Sailmaking Support Systems (http://www.sailkote.com/) to wash their sails? I just found them, and they're nearby in Greenland, NH, so I was thinking of having my sails washed and maybe coated by them.

I can't vouch for them personally, but just saw this in Haarstick Sailmakers (http://www.haarsticksailmakers.com/) newsletter (Loft Lines), which seems to speak highly of the service:

An Update on our Sail Cleaning, Mildew Removal and Sailkoting Service:

We just received our first batch (1,000lbs) of sails back from Sailmaking Support Systems and they look great! So, thanks to everyone that took advantage of the new service. You will be thrilled with the revitalized appearance of your older sails this spring.

We were particularly pleased with their Vacu-Wash Service, which removes mildew from in between the films of laminate Sails. We sent out two badly mildewed roller- furling headsails and anxiously waited to see the results. All we could say was wow, when we hung the sails up on our inspection rig. Both sails were almost 100% mildew free. What little mildew was left was barely visible.

Mildew in Laminate sails has been a big problem since their advent and even though cloth manufactures have tried various types of fungicides during the laminating process, mildew has still been able to grow inside the laminate. The Vacu-Wash process truly eliminates this problem and with the addition of their Sailkoting service, ensures that it won't come back.

Turn around is quick, which gives us a little more time to have sails cleaned and inspected before the start of the season. Proper preventative maintenance is the best way to extend your sails life for an extra season or two and maximize your time spent on the water.

Give us a call or send us an e-mail if any of the above services interest you and we will be happy to advise you with what cleaning treatment will work best for your sails.
