Re: Zincs are going fast

I hauled out my F36/38 in October 2011 painted it and and renewed maxrop zinc and two on the prop shaft. by june 2012 prop shafts were gone and in August 2012 even maxProp zinc was gone so i hauled the boat for power wash and zinc renewal again this October. I use my GoPro camera with water prof case to check the status underwater every few moths.I am thinking on using the 'zinc grouper' to prolong the time between the haul outs and perhaps using divers to do the zinc replacement as haul out and power wash costs me $300 while a diver can do it in an hour for $100 + $25 for zincs and my Micron CSC paint holds well and the hull does not foul enough in 12 months to warrant the haul out and power wash. I strongly believe this to be due to stray current from other boats as on my previous boat on another dock in the same marina (Point Roberts, WA) my zincs were still there (used up by 60%) after 2 years......
But even this expense is worthwhile considering the price of new MaxProp and potentially the shaft...

Here's a scan of an article that just appeared in this month's Cruising World.

Geoff, Thanks for the article. However, I do know that in the case of max-prop zincs, at least the ones I have been using, there is a non-zinc metal band that allows the screws to remain secure even when the since disappears, in my case, that is all that is left. It may be that older zincs didn't have this internal band.

Ed,

You must be buying the (expensive OEM?) version of the MaxProp zincs. I've never seen this. All of mine are just plain zinc.

Check out boatzincs.com for their silver anode test gear, good price and it helped us locate our zinc issues. Tom/Die Walkure F 45 CC

I too was experiencing rapid Zinc consumption on our F-35 so I switched all anodes from Zinc to Aluminum. Problem solved.

The source of the zincs could be an issue. Is it possible some zincs are from China now? If, so all bets would be off imo. Mine are stamped CAMP which is made in the USA.
