Re: Advice sought on Freedom 35 Cat Ketch as bluewater boat

As for general bluewater capability I always found it a very stiff hull even in strong storms offshore like from Boston to Bermuda with sloppy hard seas in the gulfstream.

Re: Advice sought on Freedom 35 Cat Ketch as bluewater boat

I used to have the 33. As far as the deck balsa it was generally good but… The previous owner had repaired some next to the companionway on the cabin which may have been caused but leaking from the winch bolts or screws from the hatch slide. I had 1 or 2 spots where the lifeline stanchion bolts came...

Re: Cutlass (Morse) Bearing Removal - F-33

On my 33 there were two set screws for the cutlass bearing. But they were puttied over. I could see slight depressions and then used a pointed tool to scratch down to the set screw. Be careless when installing the new one. If you put too much pressure with the Allen wrench it will bend the bronze in...

Re: Perko 493/500 water strainer blocking flow to water pump?

Only had this happen once. I believe it happened after a winterization when launching in the spring. It’s possible it ran dry briefly when I was running anti freeze through.

Re: Perko 493/500 water strainer blocking flow to water pump?

Once had a similar problem with no obvious cause. Assuming your impeller blades were still intact as mine were they are supposed to be self priming. So took me a while to out of no other ideas I poured water from the outlet hose into the implellers/pump reattached hose and it worked just needed prim...

Re: Mast leaks

When I had a 33 I found most solutions that were covers etc didnt work after a bit. On mine there was a composite ring between the mast and the collar. I found if I used a little caulking on top of the of color and ring that worked well. I applied a little more about once a year to mitigate affects ...

Re: Windlass on an 1981 Freedom 33

In my case I ran a relatively thick cable back to the batteries. But I had installed a large 400AH house bank of 6volt AGMs in the center of the bilge. I didnt like the idea of putting a battery/more weight in the bow.

Re: Windlass on an 1981 Freedom 33

I installed one forward of the mast on my F33. Made a custom piece of teak to fit aft of the anchor sprit to creat a large enough flat area. I used a Lewmar 900 horizontal windlass. I installed it while the mast was out for other reasons which made it much easier to get forward of the mast. There's ...
