Re: Ballast of the Freedom 40 UK
I don’t know about the UK built boats, but the US TPI built freedom 40 has 4.3” draft (I think is closer to ~1.5 m, 4’6”,) and displaces 12 tons (as measured by crane, brochure says 20,000 lbs.). It has a long keel and a centerboard that is not ballasted. Was the UK boat built to the same molds? BTW...

F-40 Centerboard, Worth it?
We have had aft cockpit F-40 #49 for over 8 years now. For the first 5 years we kept her in a deep water lake in Georgia and used for cruising and occasionally racing. I would always lower the board when beating, but found the benefits in upwind performance marginal. There is a markedly improvement ...

Re: climbing your unstayed carbon mast, your experience?
The F40 also only has external hailyards. I found that I can climb/hoist myself up from a bosum chair by pulling down on the return side of the hailyard while grabbing the mast with my thighs/feet in small steps/hoist s. I have somebody on deck to take the slack of the hailyard at every step. I use ...

Re: Storm Sails for F-40
Thanks for the info Carl.
What are the rough dimensions of the storm staysail? Does the head go all the way to the mast top?
Cheers,
Alex

Re: Storm Sails for F-40
That sounds like grat idea. Thanks Carl! My boat also has a track between the hatches. I have always been wary of rigging a staysail to avoid point loads on the mast. However, I see that rigging running backstays may take care of this. Where does the hailyard attach to the mast? We're you able to sa...

Storm Sails for F-40
I have a 1980 aft cockpit F-40 and I am considering the best way to include storm sails. The boat was converted to conventional sails on a track and booms with slab reefing. At the moment we have a a deep third reef to be used in very severy conditions. We will be refinishing the masts this year to ...

Re: Perkins 4.108 repair/replacement options
I installed a Beta 37 to replace the perkins in a F-40. Main reason was to meet European emisions and to prepare for an atlantic crossing. The Beta is marginally less powerfull than the perkins, but will run all day without overheating. Much smaller foot print and lower weight. I was able to use the...

Is this a Freedom 40?
Just saw this in another forum.

2 masts, 40 ft. and the pict shows a whisbone. It looks suspiciously like an F-40.
Anybody heard anything?

Re: Sheered Mast. Freedom40
That is susprising. We just completed an Atlantic crossing in a Freedom 40 (aft cockpit) and both mast steps felt rock solid. They where thoroughly tested during the crossing, specially during a whole week of 20-30 kts of wind against current in the Western Approaches that generated very uncomfortab...
