Luckily, we have a spare external halyard, which was the previous main halyard. I'll have to check the sheave more thoroughly, though I'm not sure how easy it is without taking it apart. Which I can't do while at the top of the mast.

Our main halyard on our 40/40 had some chafing around 8" above the shackle. It didn't look bad, and the halyard is still somewhat new - 5 years old, supposedly a good quality one from Vela Sailing Supply (don't recommend them). Can you tell where the valve is leaking? Forespar is easy to work with - the valve has numbers on the side and you can call forespar and get a replacement kit - the handle lever, black stack with 4 bolts/screws.
