Re: dismasted freedom 39 ph
Former owner of Katorpus here---(Sold in April 2022) Hull #61 Freedom 40 AC Katorpus "came from the factory" with a mizzen staysail and running backstays. The head of the sail was attached to a halyard on the mizzen, the sail had a wire luff and was tacked to a ring on a sail track that ran fore & a...

Re: Looking for Freedom 40 ketch aft cockpit
I don't understand your comment about being unable to insure the boat. Mine is aft cockpit Freedom 40 Cat Ketch Hull #61 (of 63), located in Corpus Christi. Upon original delivery, the masts were shipped back to the factory and "standard boooms" fitted to replace the wishbones. I've had this boat co...

Get one of those powered "nibblers" that cuts a strip out of the middle as it goes along.

Re: F30 water tank
I think you're on the right track with the idea of replacing the original Freedom water tank...mine are aluminum, built by Florida Tank and original to the boat (1981). One of the other drawbacks to "indiscriminate use of foam" in the original construction manifested before I bought the boat (when i...

Re: Exhaust Elbows
I would think you'd want to wrap the whole works thickly in glass mat and epoxy where' you're "gluing" things together. It's not unheard of for a wet exhaust to suddenly become a dry exhaust with the failure of the impeller or some kind of intake obstruction. It wouldn't take long for the temp to ri...

Re: Plastic Through hulls at deck level
Rather than risk boogering up a router bit on the glass (or if you don't have one), your can use a bent over 8 penny nail (with the head cut off) or one of the thousand allen wrenches that are probably lying in the bottom of your tool box. I've done this quite successfully. If you're installing any ...

Re: Where do we find PHRF ratings for older boats?
Ah yes...you gotta love those folks in California. Nothing like a little inconsistency. Freedom 40 (wrap around sails) is 102 in So Cal and 168 in Northern California The 40 would have to give up 36 seconds to the 44 in Southern California, while getting 27 seconds in Northern California against the...

Re: New pedestal guard for F38 is trickier than anticipated
My conscience is clear, having pointed that out. I just know that, in my personal experience, in a sudden heel, roundup, or a "quick spin" (like obliquely hitting the occasional sandbar), everyone in the cockpit tends to grab whatever they can instinctually and without much planning. The guy on the ...

Jay I hope you don’t get a finger snagged in that “Z”…could be painful and expensive. You might consider “underlaying” the letters with a piece of acrylic epoxied to the back side and pouring in epoxy dyed black then sanded & polished smooth flush with the top face to fill in those letters before in...

Re: Bridge clearance for F40 and F44
If you're gonna measure it yourself, don't mess around trying to pull a 75' tape measure up with the halyard... do this instead ... 1 ) Get a length of non-stretch line out of your line locker (it needs to be about 60'). This is your "measuring line". 2) Tie the measuring line to the halyard shackl...
