Re: F39 PHS DISCUSSION

On the question of how fast an F39 schooner is, we sailed 1000 miles from New Zealand to New Caledonia at an average speed of 5.98 knots. We spent a lot of time reaching between 8 and 9 knots. The F39 will surf controllably, though because she is quite heavy, she needs a lot of power. We once made 3...

Re: MAST REPAIR PROCESS F39PHS?

Gosh, I wish I had seen these last posts sooner. Three or four years ago I had a problem with the foremast moving around the top hat base. This was the first time I had attempted to remove one of these masts. We undid the collar, attached the crane and lifted. Up came the mast with the boat still at...

Re: F35 Routing Engine Room Blower Exhaust Overboard?

Having been involved in engine installation over the years, having a blower that actually sucks from the engine space can be a problem. The blower is competing for air which the engine needs to run efficiently. If we were commssioning and engine we check the airpressure in the engine bay. If there i...

Re: MAST REPAIR PROCESS F39PHS?

Hi Dale, Sorry to be so long replying. We are in Pangkor Marina, Lumut, near Pangkor Island. Fyne Spirit is in the covered hard stand. My Malaysian number is 0137407073. It would be great to meet you. We have been making good progress with repairs until the west system resin ran out:(. We have cut a...

Re: MAST REPAIR PROCESS F39PHS?

Hi Dale,
yes from the masthead. There is no provision to run it from a lower point, just an external halyard from a block at the masthead. I doubt if running it 7/8 would have made much difference, though it would probably require a smaller sail to do that, and the two things together may have helped.

Re: Where do people sleep at sea in a Freedom 39PH?

This is a somewhat belated reply but.... on Fyne Spirit, where we sleep depends on the weather and point of sail. Close hauled, forward is unusable. Broad reach and flat off the wind, almost anywhere is ok. For heavier conditions and reaching or close reaching the aft cabin is good for one (there ar...

Re: MAST REPAIR PROCESS F39PHS?

As we use the main boom to pole out the spinnaker, leaving the main up wouldn't give quite the support needed. The main sheet is fully extended with the sail at about 90 deg to the direction of force. Running backstays would seem to be the answer, and will certainly be employed in the future.

Re: SW Pacific and SE Asia Cruise F39PHS

Hi All, Just a wee update. The sailing plans all came together and we are now based in Malaysia for the foreseable future. We did have the pleasure of meeting a sister ship Starsend II in Noumea, a lovely boat very well looked after. We particularly liked the hard dodger enclosing the cockpit. It se...

Re: Puzzling features of the F38 engine

The lack of air supply to an engine is quite common and a result of bad practice. Having been in the engine business, we conducted commissioning tests which included measuring the air supply to the engine. Often we had to insist that extra holes were cut or a blower installed. On Fyne Spirit, the en...

Re: MAST REPAIR PROCESS F39PHS?

No running backstays, probably because the main boom extends so far aft. The mast is tp about 1987. It is white and has no circular cracking problem. The mast broke about 3 metere above the deck and 2 metres below the radome. The mast has original aluminium track with new plastic track that is fitte...
