Re: using a drill for raising the main

Note that there are two flavors of Loctite. Blue Loctite is intended to secure the screw/bolt; red Loctite is intended for much more serious/severe vibration, and is much more resistant to being removed. I only use red Loctite when it's critical or dangerous if the screw becomes undone. BTW both Loc...

Re: Hollow keel leak

You failed to state the type of boat, I assume it's one of the second generation of Freedoms. These have sumps/hollow keels because they don't need that much ballast, but need sufficient draft to make them go to windward. The leak is probably around the keel bolts that are at the bottom of the hollo...

Re: RACING A F-25

Unfortunately, the round mast version of the F25 is somewhat of a dog when compared with the wing-mast version in spite of increased sail area of the round-mast version. You can get an understanding of this when a Hobie 14 or an F25 mast not rotating because the vang is too tight. When this happens ...

Re: freedom 28/35 cat ketch rudder trim tabs or?

Please refer to Mr. Hoyt's more recent creation for a solution. The Alerion Express Cat 19 has a (relatively) high aspect rudder concealed inside the "barn-door" rudder which drops down like a centerboard. It lets you have your esthetics and your performance too. With a lot of effort such a rudder c...

Re: 1988 Freedom 28 info

I owned a 1987 Freedom 28 for about 5 years, and my comments are based on personal experiences, and the oddities of this particular boat. Firstly, the stock 2-bladed propeller is NOT optimal. I traded it for a 2-blade feathering propeller which resulted in much better acceleration and deceleration. ...

Re: Wondering about a F25 outboard to inboard conversion

Forget the discussion about horsepower; THRUST is what you need. The F25 needs about 6 HP with an appropriate propeller (which never come standard with the usual outboard motor). Look to the aftermarket prop manufacturers such as "Michigan Wheel" for a large-bladed low pitch prop that is generally i...

Re: Freedom 30 engine size options

Has anyone addressed the vast difference the propeller makes? I had a Mull 28 with the usual Yanmar 2GM, and the stock prop. Thrust was not up to measure I desired. I found a 14" feathering propeller at a local yard sale which I cleaned up, greased, and set to PYI's recommended pitch values. This pr...

Re: Fairways Marine built freedoms. history, numbers, variat

If the name is Fairey, and they once built in molded plywood, I suspect that there is an association with Fairey Aircraft of the 1930s and 1940s.

Re: Freedom 40' parts available; engine, pumps...

I am guilty of the act of alerting Shellman about the Freedom 40. We worked together in the same building in IBM Poughkeepsie. I had acquired the Freedom literature of the day, with my interest in the Freedom 25. I shared this with Shellman, and shortly thereafter he purchased a sailaway "kit" boat ...
