Anyone have a panting rod in their F36/38?

I've had the mast off for quite some time now to install new jib and spin halyard boxes and new equipment and wiring at the masthead. Will post update on all that work soon. In the meantime, and in anticipation of putting my mast back on so I have a real sailboat again, does anyone know if a panting...

Re: Water stains from port gasket leaks

I've had good results with a light sanding and re-oiling with good teak oil, if it is not already varnished.

Re: Rudder bearing on F38

Well, I found out there are no bearings on the F38 (1988). I dropped the rudder and it is stocky though a little weird looking. There are 4 Zerk fittings on the rudder log (?) inside the boat and a couple of bolts that run through to hold the rudder post in place. One at the top where the emergency ...

Re: Noisy masts.

I had the same issue on the foremast. It was moving around the top hat and made quite a noise. I made a mess of getting it out, destroying the urathane in the process. Second time I put a jack underneath with a piece of flat bar to push the wedge out. Built up the inside of the mast with epoxy and ...

Re: Shaft seal research info.

Glad to hear you have found the problem! I was convinced for a while that the leaking in the bilge was alternately a keel bolt, the holding tank, the water heater or ingress from the mast. Trust me, I didn't want to taste that water either, and though it's necessary to narrow down the problem, somet...

Re: Shaft seal research info.

Hey Mike, here's an update on my shaft seal adventure. I had ordered both the Lasdrop and the PSS seals. For the PSS seal, I also requested the carbon end without the stainless hose fitting for the vent line (i.e., the older version). I think the Lasdrop would have worked but they sent a tube that w...

Re: Would appreciate your thoughts - cruising

Great post, Dale! I am a few years behind you, but my thinking about my F38 aligns with everything you said. I can shed some light on the rudder stock. See picture of mine that just got dropped. I am hauled out to do bottom work and had mixed feelings about dropping the rudder, but to remove the sha...

Rudder bearing on F38

My Freedom 38 is going in the yard next week for the first time since I bought the boat 3 years ago. I will be doing a lot of the work myself. Among the things that I think would be good to check are the rudder bearings. I've read everything posted on the forum about the rudder et al. It looks like ...

Re: Jib top reached attachment?

Definitely. I've been using Quantum, and before they bought Haarstick I'd been saying that's what I want, but all the other things I've needed to do to the boat have been bigger priorities. And then when would we get a light wind reach to Hawaii? My understanding of the reacher is that it doesn't al...
