Re: Odd mainsail shape - advice?

I am not an expert, but it seems to me that the sail is so old it has lost its shape. The leach is sagging to leeward because it has has been overstretched, the draft is too deep and to much forward. Probably result of sailing with too much wind. It's not the result of inexperience with an unstayed ...

Re: Camber spar too long?

John, When I started sailing with Freedom I experienced the same problem, what resolved it on my boat: the forestay was a bit too tight, giving more slack helped. As you can see on the sailplan the luff of the jib isn't straight, it has a bight in it when the jib is raised and sheeted in. In order t...

Re: Freedom 40/40 roller furling jib forestay tension

Tom, I agree with Paul completely. Freedom masts are quite different from 'normal' aluminum masts. The latter needs a rigging to constrict almost any movement like the rod rigging on your C&C 38, the former needs room for movement. Constricting this room leeds mostly to problems. Four friends bought...

Re: Yanmar white smoke

The causes Geoff mentions give a white/ light grey smoke which also stinks.
Another cause and giving white smoke which doesn't stink: too little water injection in the exhaust system
resulting in a too high exhaust temperature giving water vapour.

Re: 45 anchor windlass

Geoff,
I didn't install them, they were on the boat when I bought 'Scherezade' in 2008.
Don't know whether they are original or installed by the previous owner.
Paul Dennis will know probably.

Re: Where do we find PHRF ratings for older boats?

As I understand the PHRF ratings: they represent actual numbers experienced from club racing. Which means that the differences in the ratings represent the
knowledge and experience of the individual skippers

Re: Where do we find PHRF ratings for older boats?

I have a comprehensive 2014 PHRF list on my computer ( Couldn't find the link which I used to download it last year).
So instead of sending you the link I made a pdf copy of page 57/58 in which the Freedom's are listed. Hope the one you are looking for is on the list.
