Re: Masthead removal

Hi Don, welcome! It's unfortunate you're having trouble but these are the things you'll uncover if you sail a bunch, which is a good thing, right? Find a yard that pulls a lot of masts. I was super intimidated by taking the mast off the first time but in the hands of professionals, it's a piece of c...

Re: Masthead removal

It would seem ideal to run wire inside conduit, with tie wraps around.. possibly one for lights and a smaller one for vhf/ wind indicator secured together...? How would you secure the conduit inside the mast? It seems to me this is not a trivial project. I keep coming back to using 3 sturdy zip tie...

Re: Camber spar

[snip] On a related note. In the 2018 singlehanded transpac I had installed a gun mount, pole and spinnaker. I had purchased the spin and gear from a fellow on this board but the spin was in pretty lousy shape (seller warned me) and, like a fool, I took it to sea. I flew it for about 30 minutes bef...

Re: Masthead removal

Camino, it's real easy if you pull the crane off, attach all the cables (including a way for taking the weight off between the cable and connection) and then run it back through with a tag line. Of course, make sure the tag hasn't crossed any of the halyards. Mine had and we used PVC pipe to run a n...

Re: Masthead removal

On a related question what have folks been using to seal at the deck? I used a Boat Life product that promptly cracked and leaked and makes a ton of noise. I want to dig it out and reseal with a better product. 4200? Something else? Do you mean the mast seal around the ring or at the collar? I have...

Re: Masthead removal

Nice! Who did the orange powder coat? Were they able to do one small piece like that or was there more?

When I rewired my mast I did the zip tie thing and it's never been a problem with the halyards. Nice not to have the mess of decomposing foam too.
Good to know!

Re: Masthead removal

Yes, it's that easy unless you have bad corrosion of the bolts. I pulled the old masthead crane in 2016 and a friend built a larger one so I could add a tri-color light and other things that did not have room for previously on the old crane structure. I also added foam to the new wiring. I have the ...

Re: Lewmar hatch for sale

I'd be interested in seeing pictures. I put in a new polycarbonate lens on the v-berth hatch but it is still leaking. Was thinking it might be the seal. Or maybe it's the install? How difficult was it to remove the frame? I tried pulling it up once but it was down hard so stopped before I did some d...
