Re: Good news and bad news on battery chargers

Mike, Len - do you keep your boat plugged in and charger on all summer? On Her Diamond, the only thing running off of 12 volt when we are not at the boat is the refrig - and it draws very little - but the charger is turned on all the time we are at the dock. Manufacturer said there should be no prob...

Good news and bad news on battery chargers

I wanted to share some personal experience in case anyone is looking for a new shore power battery charger. Last week, I went down to the boat to finish up some spring commissioning work. I found the refrig warm and realized that it had shut down because the battery voltage had dropped below 11.5 vo...

Re: Stepping the mast this week

Thanks for info on butyl tape. I will pursue. Regarding question about cleaning up old silicone, I begin with single edge razor blade (either hand-held or in a painters window scraper) and carefully cut off the caulk. I then use mineral spirits to soften the remaining caulk and residue. Once softene...

Re: Stepping the mast this week

I look forward to hearing how the butyl caulk works. In prep for leaving Great Lakes and retirement cruising (leaving summer 2017) we will be taking mast down and moving boat into shop this winter (change from VC 17 to ocean paint, raise water line, adjust mast step, install new equipment...). Clean...

Re: Roller furler

End of next week, I will be installing my new headsail. We have ordered a somewhat flat cut tri-radial cruising spinnaker on a flexible (top down) furler. We designed it so the tack will be secured to the top of the bow pulpit, where the gun mount tube would normally be fastened. We have also design...

Re: Anyone have a panting rod in their F36/38?

My 1991 F38 has the same set up. Paul Dennis was production manager at Freedom and would probably know why it was installed on the 38s.

Re: hatch and portlight gasket (redux)

Around 15 years ago we had a similar problem with leaking opening port gaskets on our 1987 F30. As noted, the original gaskets are integral to the port and cannot be replaced without destroying the frame. We had a number of conversations with the very friendly customer service poeple at Bomar, who e...

Re: Fist time sailing a Freedom

Blue wedge at partners might be original polyurethane compression ring and its purpose is to secure mast and prevent movement at the deck - which takes the entire mast load in the absence of standing rigging. Some owners have replaced it with spartite. I don't have any experience with it (still usin...

Re: Fist time sailing a Freedom

On many Freedoms, the mast fit around the mast step is a bit loose - permitting the base of the mast to move back and forth when you tack in a breeze or seaway, or when the boat rocks back and forth at anchor. My guess the movement does not do harm, but the sound can be quite atrocious. We fixed the...

Re: 1987 Freeedom 30 Survey

As noted above, Paul Dennis can help you out. We used Tides on our F30 and F38. Very happy.
