Re: Self tacking jib on the sloop rig.
Interesting thoughts on asymmetrical spi. I was thinking about a reaching sail on flexible furler for our F38. Will need to give some serious thought to construction so as to have reasonable wind range. Am not sure if it would replace the self-tacking jib - but would really love to free up foredeck ...

Re: Severe weather sailing
Looks like my login timed out - so am re-posting. Sorry if this comes through twice. Another cause of the annoying scraping/banging noise is the mast-base moving back and forth on the mast step as the boat moves in a seaway. The ID of most freedom masts are not an exact fit over the OD of the raised...

Re: Roller furling headsails
Wonder what brand or type of furlers you have been using? I've heard that the whip-loading caused by mast movement will damage (tear apart) furler extrusions. I recently heard someone talk about using a flexible furler with a reaching foresail. Appreciate any thoughts.

Re: fuel oil in the bilge -- F38
I've had some leaking from several of the banjo bolts on metal fuel lines - need occasional snugging.

Re: Main halyard at top of mast of F-36.
For the future, the F36/38 masthead is equipped with 2 small (approx 1"dia.) sheves - one forward and one aft. They are there for a messenger line to pull a spare (masthead) halyard in case the primary one is lost. We run a 1/8" line through and then pull both halves forward (one exits aft) and tie ...

Re: Self tacking jib on the sloop rig.
I think running back stays are required for taller sails.
I'm thinking about a code zero or asymetric on a detachable flexible furler to add some horsepower to my F38.

Re: Freedom Yachts Demise
Mark, Good to see you (in print). I just found this board - missed chatting about Freedoms since the old Freedom Board was overwhelmed with spam and taken off line. I did end up buying the blue 1991 F38 in Boston and have had 2 great seasons of sailing and working on her - here on Lake Erie. My old ...
