Coaming seat modification on F36/38

Post by brico »

Hi,

On my 1986 F36/38 i had a pretty good view sitting at the nicely rounded coaming and railing extruded backwards to lean against. Now that I have fitted my Raymarine C120 chart plotter above the compass binnacle, my view from that sitting position is gone and I either have to stand to see clearly or raise my seating position. Standing for short periods of time is OK, but not for hours. In our area (Pacific North West ) we have a lot of logs floating in the water and when motoring I like to watch what is in front of me to avoid hitting those and potentially damafging the boat. Sailing is a bit slower and less likely to damage the propeller and shaft unlike when motoring.

Has anyone done any modifications to raise the seating on F36?

I had a custom helm seat made for my F36/38 in 2008 by:

Ocean Marine Systems

Richmond, BC

The pedestal guard has a chart plotter and instruments and is hard to see over.
With the seat I don't have any problem seeing. My wife who is 5'4" throws another cushin
on top and it works for her.

Two pictures attached.

Hi Jim,

Thank you. This is great idea and I can male this myself over the winter months. I really struggled to and from Desolation sound this summer where most of the time I motor due to lack of wind.
I see the front fastener is same as lifeline one with quick disconnect/open latch. How easy is it to detach the back fasteners?

It is held in with two fast pins real easy to disconnect. Made a canvas bag to tore it in when not connected.

BTW last winter I had the yard glass in the seam between the scoop and the transom and remove the inspection
ports. I no longer looks like an add on and stopped all leaks into the scoop.

I made a seat for my 38, similar to the one pictured. Instead of suspending the seat bottom from the upper stern pulpit tubing, I installed legs underneath that rest on the aft deck - at forward edge on either side of the emerge3ncy tiller deck plate. I don't currently have a pircure - but may be able to grab one this weekend. I also used jaw clamps and fast pins to quickly remove - makes access to swim platform much easier. I made mine out of the placticized (home) deck mateirals and it stays out all summer. Very durable.

Hi Sailmon,

thanks, i'd love to see that design as well. Whatever is easiest and quicker to do will be my choice.

I still haven't figured out how to drop a picture into a post - but believe I have attached 3 pictures of my helm seat to this post. If not, perhaps someone could advise me.
