vang attachment to boom on 40/40

Post by jlodolce »

The point at which vang attaches to my boom has 10 rivets hold it in place, 3 fore of the attachment plate (2nd photo) and 7 aft (first photo). The three fore rivets are partway out. Of the 7 aft, 3 are gone, one is slightly out, and the other 3 look as they should. See attached photos.

Since most of the force from the vang is pulling the boom downward, and the rivets hold the vang in place against the boom's upward force, I do not think this is a critical issue that needs immediate attention, but it probably should be fixed sooner rather than later. I think these all need to be drilled out and replaced with slightly larger rivets, but I would like the group's opinion.

Does anyone else have experience with this issue?

Jim, we have F 40/40 hull #11. The attachment for our boom is held in with threaded SS machine screws. A few years ago the attachment point for the vang snapped off the fitting in a sloppy seaway and we had a new vang attachment fabricated at our marina. I would recommend changing to a machine screw and definitely check the attachment for crevice corrosion in the area that it is covered by the vang end. Never saw the problem until the vang broke off. Also check all of the block loops along the boom where the blocks for the main sheet attach. Had two of them snap off also due to crevice corrision. Loops are also held in with threaded machine screws. PO obviously had problems with these loops as there where several Schaefer spares on board. We had custom loops fabricated at the marina as well and have no issues since. Important things break at the worst possible time! Paul

Might want to look at something like these to drill and tap in one fell swoop, once the old rivets are gone

Paul,

Thank you for your reply. Mine are definitely rivets. Changing to machine screws is one option for me to consider. The other loops look ok, but will check again.

Camino,

Thanks for the drill/tap thoughts.
