Deck gelcoat repairs

Post by Camino »

Continuing saga - in limping Good Way back to the bay after the race to have the yard repair/replace the prop shaft and motor mounts (yay- they were gracious to foot the entire cost!), I blew out the harken roller furler (this had been giving me trouble for a good year - see posts). When the furler base exploded at 5:30 am in 25 kts while I was trying to roll it in a bit, the jib blocks went flaying all over the coach roof sides near the mast causing deep gouges there and in the mast- as it took me a bit of time to hand in the jib with those darn blocks. Coach roof sides by the mast had 7 gouges about 1/2” round and 1/4” or more deep. Following Carlianne’s posts I used WM gelcoat repair kit. Mixed up 7 small small batches followed those instructions and finished with 600 grit wet paper followed by polishing. Results below - my color matching wasn’t perfect on a couple of the gouges but for now it works. The mast gouges need me to re do them as they do look bad.
