Freedom 33 wood interior replacement

Post by Guero »

I'll warn y'all now. I'm the new owner of a 1982 freedom 33 and I'm going to take full advantage of these forums. I can tell I'm going to have to go to town on a few port lights and possibly a hatch this spring and summer. Any suggestions on where to find wood paneling to match our get closer to matching interior. I've tried to attach a pic.
Thank you in advance
Guero

Sorry I don't have an answer. I had the same issue and tore out all of the paneling around the port lights. Very thin and all of it was shot. Not sure if I will be replacing it or just fair out both sides and paint it.

Yay for boats! You could carefully remove the old panels (and port lights), keep for patterns, use 1/4” ply cut to shape and use cherry (?) veneer over - as in below- and go that way…..suggestion. I used contact cement on both surfaces and ironed to stick. Btw - I never know how to post pics right side up- also I didn’t match the stain this shot…

Given my climate i am considering furing out with 3/4 strips and filling the void with rigid insulation. May do the cabin sides and other visible areas with a cedar shipman or pvc decorative boards.

Hey Guero,
we just did a similar job on our Freedom 45. All of the ports in the aft cabin were leaking. I replaced them with newfound metals replacements and they are fantastic and solve the issue with the the original ports barely being held in and relying on loads of gunk.

Our wood was even worse than what you are showing. While we ended up enlisting a woodworking friend to do the work, in hindsight I probably could have done it. Where we are we have a great lumber shop called Boulter that had thin cherry ply. I'm sure you can find a similar shop near you.

We ripped out everything and replaced it with that with a simple minwax stain over it, and it turned out pretty dang good. I wouldn't have even considered replacing the wood without moving to new portlights as well, otherwise we would have ended up right back where we started.

Here are before, during, and after shots.
