electric windlass on a F30 CK Hoyt

Post by seadago »

Hello friends
I must be getting old I guess, but the task of manually retrieving 60 mts of rode (and here in the Med, that´s not at all unusual) is making me re-evaluate my love for sailing. Not to mention running like a madman from the bow to the stern of Nausikaa to control the boat single-handed, in a crowded anchorage, while I am doing it. So.... I´m considetring installing an electric windlass. I would prefer to put a surface mounted, horizontal windlass, but those are the most expensive and budget is tight.
I´d like to get some feedback from others that have done this, make and model choice, and degree of contentment with results.
Many thanks in advance
Rafa

On my "To Do List".

It may be sacrilegious but looking at drum winches...

No sacriledge. I have! Unfortunately I have 30 mts of chain, and apart from that, electric ones are not anymore competitive pricewise than cutlasses with a rope/chain gipsy.
I also looked at large drum winches. I need 700 W power motor and a spool large enough to hold 70 mts of 14 braided nylon plus 30 mts of 8 mm chain. Not enough room in front to the main mast to house that monster.
So I'm back to sq 1!
Currently I am looking at a Lofrans Dorado 800 W, with an 8 mm chain gipsy. Package deal with controls and electrical components, I will need to fork out about 1200 EUR. Blimey!! 😰

Stopped in West Marine and LFS today.

EZ4 drum winch, no line or chain, was $3200 usd.
Lewmar Pro 1000 was $1369 usd.

Hmmm I think I know which way I shall be going...

Well I changed my mind and went with Maxwell HCR instead. Did read alot of negative about the Lewmar. See how it holds up. Will not get to use it till next summer so no big hurry on installation. Plus I have a list of other priorities before snow falls....

We installed a Lewmar V700 on our 1987 F30, Weeble, and it fits nicely and works well. We turned the bow cleat 90-degrees to give more room in front of it, removed the anchor rode hawse pipe, and then glued a rectangular piece of Starboard to the deck to cover the old hawse pipe hole while having the windlass be far enough back to ensure plenty of free-fall into the anchor locker. We installed the up/down switch on the helm and used existing but abandoned electrical cable for the connection. We are running a Rocna 15 with Lewmar swivel and Lewmar anchor rode of 35 feet of 1/4" chain and 200 feet of 8-plait rode. So far so good. Only problem I had was not reading the directions about soaking my nylon rode in fabric softener to condition it prior to use. I ended up with a few snags in the rode, but still all good!

Hi, thanks for the info. Good to know it is possible! Would you mind posting a few pics of your install? My F30 is UK built, with a different bowsprit and anchor roller setup from US built boats. Would be good to compare.
Thanks again!

Hi Rafa,

How did your project go or is it still in the thought out mode?

I end up purchasing a Maxwell HRC8 for my boat. Still sitting in the garage waiting for spring to show up. I am also replacing my current anchor bowsprit with a new addition. The old one was rotted to the core. My oldest worked for our Parks and Rec and they replaced a bunch of cedar tombstones. I got this 5' x 24" cedar slab (1.5" thick). Still has the gentleman's information on one side. It will be different for sure.
