OMG I finally understand what you are all telling me. Sorry to be so dense. The stiff black material is the actual bearing surface. It lines the tubular bronze shell that seemed to me to look so durable. So yes, my cutlass bearing is failing and I’m lucky to be able to replace it before it goes completely. Thank you.
