Windlass on an 1981 Freedom 33

Post by Anna »

Has anyone fitted a windlass, either electric or manual, to a 33 cat ketch? Where did you locate it? I am a single sailor and find I can't pull my anchor in much of a breeze and so am considering putting in a windlass. Pictures would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I added one on my Freedom 35. It had a very shallow anchor locker so first I opened up the bottom of the locker and fiber glassed the are in the V berth to allow the chain to drop. I then installed the Lofrans windlass on the deck above the locker.

Thanks for the response.

My anchor locker is very deep and wraps around the mast entirely. The problem for me is there is so little room on deck anywhere near the hawse pipes that direct the chain into the locker. The windlass might be able to go near the existing ones and the cleats and mast, if it was vertical and very, very small. Otherwise it needs to go aft of the pipes between the front of the house and the mast. Then I would have to feed the chain forward by hand. As a single I would rather be at the helm not running back and forth as I do now,: pull some chain, hustle back to the cockpit to motor up again, pull more chain.

Anyone else with a Freedom 33 install a windlass successfully?

My Freedom 30 cat ketch (UK) has a manual windlass installed i front of the main Mast.
The Freedom 33 should have fairly similar spaceing there.

I can take detailed pictuers this weekend if you want.

I installed one forward of the mast on my F33. Made a custom piece of teak to fit aft of the anchor sprit to creat a large enough flat area. I used a Lewmar 900 horizontal windlass. I installed it while the mast was out for other reasons which made it much easier to get forward of the mast. There's plenty room just challenging working around the mast. I even put in a bow thruster just aft of the mast. Pics are attached

On the UK built F 33's/35's, the windlass was mounted on the 'bowsprit', with a hawse pipe running down to the chain locker. You can see the layout from the photo taken when the windlass was removed for servicing. "Castaway" has a non-standard pulpit, but the bowsprit is original, and the same as the US version. The PO glassed in a low bulkhead below decks, ahead of the mast, where the chain lies; if you do this, make sure you keep the limber-holes clear, or else the rust will ruin the chain! (don't ask)

In my case I ran a relatively thick cable back to the batteries. But I had installed a large 400AH house bank of 6volt AGMs in the center of the bilge. I didnt like the idea of putting a battery/more weight in the bow.
