Rivet dimensions for boom on F38

Post by gamayun »

Hi,

I'm installing a rigid boom vang on my F38. It looks like my boom thickness might be 5/8" to 11/16". Does anyone know more precisely?

Thew thickness of the boom wall is maximum 1/8" but i believe even less than that. That is plenty anyway. I have installed the Garhauer rigid boom vang last spring and initially used 3/16" aluminium rivets which have eventually failed in strong wind. Then I went with 1/4" SS rivets but needed specialty tool to fit which was luckily available by mechanic in the Marina boat yard. I have sailed in all sorts of conditions since and the fitting is still solid with six 1/4" SS rivets holding it in place. Great addition to my boat. I no longer have to worry to tighten up on lazy jacks before dropping the main sail. good additional control of the mainsail when sailing downwind which is this boat's best trait. Money well spent.
