F21 mast bolts at sleeve

Post by wbalser »

Hey friends,

Does anyone happen to have the dimensions of the bolts for the mast? I’m missing a few of these. I have a picture here to show. Any help much appreciated !

I don't recognize those bolts, I don't think my 21 has them. Where are they?

Thanks for posting. Yeah it looks like the mast on mine was resleeved/ services some years ago so those are from that. I noticed a few missing. However I was able to find an extra one so now I have one to match. One thing I am having though is some rotation of the mast—-somewhere deep in the cabin. Clearly something is not quite right. It does not look like an integrity issue—they went to great expense years ago to do this work—including pictures of the machining. But looks like it needs these bolts and also somewhere down below so it does not rotate.

You should give Paul Dennis a call. He has 2 Freedom 21's at the moment, one of which has been chopped in half and is being used for parts. I'm sure that he could measure the bolts for you.

This is confusing. Is this mast equipped with a tabernacle? My former F21 (I think one of the ones Paul has) had a tabernacle mast. But, it was a hinged sleeve that fit entirely within the mast. That little rope eye I see in one of the pictures would not fit inside a mast! Did someone graft an aluminum stump onto the carbon-fiber tube? The tabernacle is worth keeping though it adds a little weight.

Hey friends,

Many thanks for the help! I am on to the next round of troubleshooting. I will post some video to show the situation in detail.

To review, the mast was refitted years ago with the new aluminum shaft in the pictures below. I have a few questions to help troubleshoot.

Q1: For those of you that have a full carbon fiber mast (without a retrofit), can you tell me if your mast ever swivels slightly? For example, mine swivels about 5 degrees. This makes hoisting the mainsail impossible as it creates tension on the halyard and also snags on the lazy jack lines as it moves up the track. It's a hot mess. I would think this is all due to the retrofit, but actually this may be swiveling all the way down in the cabin at the step.

Q2: Can any of you share images of your rigging? I am particularly interested in seeing lazy jack lines and support of the boom.

Thank you!
