Ian, I set and leave the outhaul as well. I think it is not important unless you have a loose foot on the main. In any case in stronger winds you reef down and then have some control over the outhaul from the reefing line. In my opinion, there is enough rope in the cockpit anyway 😁

Geoff, in my experience on the 21, it is only the top batten that ever catches the lazy jacks and that is pretty easy to unsnag. The others are well outside the lines due to the deep leech. Also I agree you want the airflow attached at the leech but I do not think an inch or so of battens protruding is going to make any difference to that
