F32: what are these “circular cutouts” on the deck?

Post by weirdofreedom »

First, I’m sorry about the endless questions. Little experience and I’m still trying to get a handle on how big a project this boat is going to become.

Today’s question:

‘84 F32 - there are these “circular” cut outs on the deck. One on port and one on starboard near the rear along location. From the side you can see into the pocket under the toe rail. I’m trying to figure out what they are to determine if I need to do something to repair them.

I’m at a loss. :?:

Following... I assumed they are simply a place for water on deck to drain (?).

Sounds plausible. You have them on yours too?

That is the deck drain, same on the 3 "84 Hoyt 32's that I have seen.

These deck recesses allow water to drain under the toerail. Without them standing water would buildup until it was high enough to drain through the holes in the side of the toerail.

The biggest problem with these is if the boat is not "trimmed" properly. If the boat is "down by the head" or "down by the stern," water will puddle forward or aft of the the recess.

Not to hijack this thread, but I'm curious as to what's the alternative. On my F38, it does not have any drains on the deck. I recently purchased some hardware to create a drain that goes out the sides. I know exactly where the water puddles and it's eating away the toe rail in those areas. Still, I'm a little hesitate to take a hole saw to my boat like this

On the later F38's they added side deck drains connected to hoses, which went to thru-hulls just forward of the cockpit drains. You can see where the drains are on my boat, though I can't say that's where they put them for everyone.
